Stated in the contract, Nike has had a Multi-Sport Apparel Agreement with the University of Iowa since 2004. While the shoe companies get invaluable exposure, the schools receive equipment, annual payments and performance bonuses. Of course, these relationships are mutually beneficial. The Business Insider averaged Nike pays universities $2.5 million in their apparel contracts. Of the 64, Nike leads the way with having contracts with 36 schools, including the University of Iowa. Shoe companies like Nike, Under Armour, and Adidas pay universities across the country millions of dollars so student-athletes, coaches, and staff can be seen on television wearing their products.įormer NBA Television President Ed Dresser created an expert report on the financial terms in the shoe company contracts for the 64 Division I universities. College football is becoming a battleground for shoe companies competing against each other to get their products worn on national television. It is near the end of the college football season, and student-athletes aren’t the only ones competing on national television. “I don’t think it is fair.” Andrew Wellik, former Hawkeye running back says, “I feel like it is just Nike using us to get their name out there, and I kind of would like to get some cash out of the deal too.”
